Over 10 districts in the central provinces are at risk of flooding, as the water level of the Mekong river and its tributaries continue to rise.
Around 400 hectares of rice fields have been damaged or destroyed by flooding in Khammuan province.
Water levels in Mekong branches have already reached dangerous levels in eight districts of Khammuan province, following torrential rains in the wake of tropical storm Nock-Ten over the weekend.
About 100 hectares of rice fields in Nhommalath district were damaged and 112 poultry birds killed, while more than 1,000 hectares of rice crops in Mahaxay and Xebangfay districts were inundated by floodwaters. Some fish ponds in the districts were also damaged and local authorities are assessing the full extent of the damage.
People in Xaybuathong and Bualapha districts have been cut off from the provincial capital by floodwaters, a provincial disaster office staff member, Mr Meaungma Phetsiya, told Vientiane Times yesterday.
The Xebangfay, Hinboun, Xe and Pakan rivers are reaching dangerous levels and houses, roads and large areas of crops have been flooded. Provincial and district authorities are monitoring the situation and will evacuate people if it is necessary.
