Prime Minister Thongsing Thammavong has pledged to release an emergency and aid relief fund for help flood-hit victims in Vientiane province, which is now on worst conditions.

The commitment was made during his visit Vientiane province on 20 September.

PM and his delegates has monitored the flood-affected areas in Vientiane province to evaluate the damaged areas by flood and prepare aid relief fund for flood victims.

At the same day, the PM Thongsing, Vientiane Governor, Mr. Khammuong Phongthady and concerned officials were on helicopter to observe the flooded areas in Thoulakhom, Viengkham, Phonhong districts in Vientiane province and Nasaythong district of Vientiane Capital.

The worse situations of flooding in province were briefed by Vientiane Governor Khammuong to the PM and his delegation. Vientiane has been hit by flood for four times, due to Haima, Nock-Ten tropical storm, torrential rain for days and the water release from the Nam Ngum 1 dam to compound the flooding.

People living along with the Nam Ngum dam has been directly impacted which resulted many areas have been inundated including agriculture, infrastructure, schools and hospitals and people’s property.

Vientiane Governor evaluated the total damaged cost was 280 billion kip including the roads accounting to 100 billion kip and irrigation system standing at 26 billion kip.

“The government will bring this problem to discuss at the cabinet meeting to seek for the emergency and aid relief budget for help victims and improve roads, irrigation system and necessaries,”
PM said.

PM added that the provincial leaders to close up monitor the flood conditions and encourage people to overcome the impact of natural disaster phenomena.

The government has pledged to help the flood victims either short or long terms especially the preparation for upcoming dry season production, he went on.

The Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare, Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, Ministry of Public Works and Transport and Ministry of Health have been assigned to closely collect information in order to report the government for the approval of aid relief fund.
