Vietnam and Laos agreed to complete border demarcation by the end of 2012 at a Thursday meeting of their joint committee on border marking.

The fourth meeting of the Vietnam-Laos Joint Committee on Border Marker Planting was held in the Laos capital Vientiane from November 22 to 24.

The countries have planted 489 markers at 622 identified locations, the delegates were told.

The Vietnamese delegation was led by Deputy Foreign Minister Ho Xuan Son, who is also chairman of the committee.

The Lao delegation was led by Deputy Foreign Minister Bounkeut Sangsomsak, the committee president.

Vietnam and Laos share a border running more than 2,000 kilometers from north to south.

Following an agreement in 1977, they demarcated the border and planted markers in 1987.

However, all the markers used at that time were small and they were badly damaged.

The two countries started re-identifying the locations and replanting the markers in 2008.
