Sekong are at high risk of HIV infection

People in Sekong province are at high risk of HIV infection and Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs), due to the influx of migrant workers from neighbouring countries.

The warning was made during an annual meeting on hygienic education, AIDS and STIs, held in Sekong province last week.

The advertisement and useful information on hygienic education has not gained an access to youth group- high risk group who commonly work in construction areas, entertainment places, among others.

Since 2000, three have died of HIV/AIDS and around 900 people have been tested for HIV infection, of which ten people have been found positive for the deadly virus.

Head of Hygienic Education, AIDS and STIs Division of Sekong province, Dr. Somphone Simmavong called on all sectors to enhance their cooperation to counter and reduce the rate of HIV infection.

The nationwide infection of HIV remains at the lowest rate 0.002% of population. Under the National Strategic Plan of 2011-2015 will control the inflection of HIV, age 15-45 to be stood at 1% and the risky group to be less
than 5%.

In order to fulfill the plan, we should further conduct a condom use campaign and we should assign the provincial and districts committees to collect information the migrant foreign workers and provincial and district hospitals by mobilising local people and workers to voluntarily to test their blood.
