Another transnational drug trafficking ring busted
The ring was led by Nguyen Thi Bich Ngoc, 42, who lives in Hiep Hoa district, Bac Giang Province, about 35km from Hanoi.
In late 2006 the police uncovered a group of Vietnamese people transporting heroin from Laos to Vietnam across such border gates as Lao Meo in Thanh Hoa province and Lao Bao in Quang Tri province.
Through sleeper cells, the traffickers distributed the drugs in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and Son La, Hoa Binh, Bac Ninh, Bac Giang and Quang Ninh provinces for sale. Part of the drugs was transported to China.
Police sources said the traffickers used luxury cars to transport dozens to hundreds of cakes of heroin each time they entered Vietnam.
On April 19, 2012, the Quang Ninh police arrested five suspects in Hanoi, Lang Son and Bac Giang, and confiscated 80,000 pills of synthetic drugs, 12 grams of crystallized methamphetamine, and more than VND1 billion in cash.
So far the provincial police have prosecuted 25 accomplices, including detaining 19 and issuing an international warrant for the six remaining.
They seized 89 cakes of heroin, 113,000 pills of synthetic drugs, 1 kilogram of crystallized methamphetamine, more than VND1.1 billion, US$25,000, and six cars.
