The town of Paxse in Champassak province is now free of floodwater after the level of the Mekong River receded over the weekend.
Savannakhet disaster management committee transports clean water and other dry foods to help flood victims.
However, 20,000 hectares of crops are still underwater in eight districts of the province, affecting over 12,000 families, according to a report from the provincial disaster management office.
“The number of deaths in Champassak caused by the flooding has risen to four, including three boys who drowned in Soukhouma and Mon districts while attempting to swim to higher ground, and one man in Pakxe district who died trying to find food,” a provincial disaster management committee member, Mr Khamtaeng Tiengvoravong, told V ientiane Times yesterday.
Around 600 flood victims in the province have moved to higher ground, staying in temples, schools or other makeshift campsites, he said.
Many roads, irrigation systems and bridges were damaged by the floods and access roads to several districts and villages remain impassable.
The water level of the Mekong River in Pakxe dropped to 12.98m on Friday, 12.46m on Sunday and is expected to drop 12.36m today, according to the provincial meteorology and hydrology
