Sing district plans to counter against opium poppy plantation

The authorities of Sing district, Luangnamtha province, early this month discussed a plan for countering against opium poppy plantation in the district.

The meeting was co-chaired by Deputy Chief of Sing district, Mr. Bounlerth Douang-ngeun who is also chairman of Sing Drug Supervision and Control Committee, and Head of Sing Military Unit, lieutenant colonel Bounphoum Sorsouphub.

Taking place at the meeting were Head of Provincial Drug Supervision and Control Committee and the authorities of Chiengkhaeng village cluster.

Mr. Bounlerth said that based on the party and government’s policy on implementing strategic plan to take action narcotic drug trafficking and aiming at making the drug-free area. He also highlighted last year’s work of drug supervision and control in the Sing district. Chiengkhaeng village group in Sing district has eight villages, of which seven villages are Akha tribe and a village is Lue tribe with a total number of 300 households and population of 1,966 rely on opium poppy farms covering almost 16 ha.

The local authorities have so far conducted a dissemination campaign on drug law to villagers in Chiengkhaeng village cluster.

The meeting has shared ideas to improve the works on promotion of fixed jobs and plant other cash crops for market sale instead of opium poppy plantation areas.
