A high ranking delegation of Laos led by H.E Dr. Thongloun Sisoulith, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs attended the 66th session of the General Assembly (GA) held on 21-30 September at the UN Headquarters in New York.
According to the press release from the ministry of foreign affairs, the session is attended by 117 head of the states and government, 65 vice presidents, deputy prime ministers and foreign ministers.

The session reviewed the situations faced by international community including their situation on politic, peace, security, economic, environment and natural disasters. The leaders of the UN member country expressed their views on the problems happened in the world and proposed some measures to address. The emerged issue in the session is an application for the UN membership of the State of Palestine.
The world leaders also expressed their views on the international terrorism, environmental impact, financial crisis and other important issues.
Dr. Thongloun Sisoulith was invited on 26 September to make a speech at the meeting. Dr Thongloun Sisoulith expressed his congratulations to Mr. Ban Ki – moon for his re-election as the secretary general of the United Nations. He also estimated the world situation and reconfirmed the foreign policy of the Lao PDR on peace, independence, friendship and co-operation aiming to bring the benefits for national development and to contribute for protecting peace and security in the region and in the world.
He said that the said policy has been reaffirmed at the 9th Congress of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party held on March 2001. by the right policy, the Lao PDR cloud maintain its stability on politic and social order which is the main factor for the social-economic development as well as for poverty reduction in the country.
While in New York, Dr. Thongloun Sisoulith and his delegation also attended the ministerial conference for the landlocked, ministerial conference of G77, high level meeting on non communicable and the high level meeting on anti-terrorism and other important conferences.
On this occasion, Dr. Thongloun Sisoulith also held a bilateral meeting with foreign minister from Iceland, Slovenia and Belarus to exchange their views on the regional and international issues. He also signed in Multilateral Agreement on International Think Tank for Landlocked Developing Countries.
