Kaysone Phomvihane Culture Hall underway in Savannakhet

A culture hall to honour the late President Kaysone Phomvihane is under construction in Savannakhet province, funded by a gift of US$8.5 million from the government of Vietnam. A groundbreaking ceremony takes place to start construction of the Kaysone Phomvihane Culture Hall.

A groundbreaking ceremony to mark the start of construction of the complex took place last week. The ceremony was attended by representatives from the Lao People's Revolutionary Party Central Committee Office, the External Relations Committee of the Party Central Committee, the Lao-Vietnam Friendship Association and provincial officials from Savannakhet.

The Vietnamese delegation included representatives from the Communist Party of Vietnam's Central Committee Office and External Relations Committee, and the Vietnamese Embassy to Laos.

The complex is expected to be completed by the end of this year. The contractor is Construction Corporation No. 36 under the supervision of Vietnam's Ministry of National Defence.

The project incorporates four separate buildings. The first is a single-storey building that will be 210 square metres in size. The second building comprises two floors on an area of 1,010 square metres and will contain training rooms, a gym, and an all-purpose function room.

The third building will be two storeys high and cover an area of 198 square metres, and will function as an administrative office. The fourth and largest building covers an area of 1,355 square metres and includes a reception room and the main hall, where conferences and cultural performances will take place.

The project is part of activities this year to celebrate the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties and the 35th anniversary of the signing of the Vietnam-Laos Friendship and Cooperation Treaty.

Savannakhet provincial Governor Dr Souphanh Keomixay said the project was very significant and would benefit the people of the province. It would provide them with a cultural centre that would promote relations between Laos and Vietnam and develop the special solidarity between the governments and people of the two countries.
