PM urges crackdown on crime

Social problems are on the rise in Laos, mainly in the form of criminal activities like robberies, illegal trade, prostitution, corruption, and drug abuse and trafficking, according to Prime Minister Thongsing Thammavong.

Speaking at a meeting yesterday to discuss social problems prevalent in Vientiane, the PM called on the relevant sectors to actively combat negative phenomena in all forms and formulate approaches to ensure public security in the capital.

Mr Thongsing said destructive elements have also tried to create problems, aiming to destroy national security by publishing incorrect information online relating to ethnic groups, religion, democracy and the country's management.

He explained that social problems are due to various factors, one of which is a lack of responsibility on the part of some officials, who do not take these problems seriously.

The PM accepted that while Laos has enacted a number of laws, law enforcement remains inadequate and some officials enforce the laws in an inappropriate manner.

“Some who have breached the law have not faced legal action. If we don't address this problem seriously, it will affect the image of our regime and create hindrances for national protection and development in the future.”

He said authorities in the capital have done a reasonable job but must do more to systematically address social problems.

The capital needs to disseminate information on the country's laws, as well as issues related to security, to officials who will continue to monitor the situation.

Mr Thongsing also urged officials in the relevant sectors to work harder to actively address social problems, particularly in relation to drug abuse and trafficking.

He advised officials to better manage foreign workers and migrants who run businesses in Laos, to ensure they comply with all of the country's laws.

In recent times, gunfights have marred the capital and violated the country's laws.

The PM said he wants local authorities to try to reduce crime in the capital before the Asia-Europe Meeting Summit at the end of this year.

The meeting was attended by Deputy Prime Minister Asang Laoly and Vientiane Mayor Soukanh Mahalath.
