Tra Vinh man arrested for attempted subversion

Police with the Ministry of Public Security Thursday arrested a man who had joined an overseas organization which aims to overthrow the government, the Nguoi Lao Dong newspaper reported Thursday.

Vo Viet Dzien, 41, from the Mekong Delta province of Tra Vinh, will be detained for four months pending investigations into charges of “acting to overthrow the people’s administration.”

According to the police, Dzien met a man named Nhat Thang, a member of the US-based reactionary organization named Vietnam Restoration Party, via the internet.

As instructed by Thang, last November, Dzien flew to Singapore to meet Nga and Cuong – two leaders of the above-mentioned party – and was provided with documents about the party.

Dzien was also given US$1,500 to buy communication devices and $50,000 to buy a land plot to build a farm with the aim to earn money for his subversive activities.

In March, the party transferred $2,000 into Dzien’s bank account to attend a training course in Thailand.

Between March 26 and 30, Dzien was trained to use some computer software and devices to interfere with the broadcasts of the Vietnamese State’s radio service, Voice of Vietnam.

He was tasked with going back to Vietnam to deploy a plan which aimed to cause disorder in residential areas of people of Chinese descent in Vietnam and incite people to join demonstrations against the government in Hanoi.

Police said Dzien was arrested while he was preparing for the subversive activities.

The Vietnam Restoration Party was established in 1978 in Los Angeles by some former officers and soldiers of the now-defunct Saigon regime, according to the police.

It aims to abolish the leadership of the Vietnamese Communist Party and overthrow the government.
